FAQ
Can therapy help me?
Yes absolutely, otherwise I wouldn’t be in this business! I believe therapy and counseling does help. It does also require the work of both of us to make it work. I’ve learned that the more work you put into your sessions and outside of sessions, the more you get out of it. At the end of the day, my goal is always to help make you feel better and more at peace, so I will stand by that. Our work is an open dialogue and always has room for adjustments. Let me know if you have feedback!
Why is therapy different from talking to a friend?
That’s a great question! If you are fortunate enough to have a great friend that you can talk to about personal matters, you will gain tremendously. It is a great support that is needed and a friend can guide you, listen, and simply be there for you, which is very therapeutic. However, therapy is different. A therapist is trained in the different areas of mental health and has gained essential skills in linking present behaviors with past events in your life. By doing so, you can become more aware and the reasons why you continue certain patterns in your life. While a friend may give you advice and you can simply “vent”, a therapist can help give you the tools so that you can make your own decisions based on what works for you.
How long should I be in therapy?
It really depends on the issue you would like to work on. My goal would be to help you find the tools you need so you can eventually work on your own issues. Ultimately, the decision is yours as to when you would like to end therapy. At some point in therapy, you will find yourself talking about “surface” topics, and sometimes feel “I have nothing to say.” This is different than being in denial of your issues, which is when we have issues to bring up, but choose not to discuss it because it’s too difficult or painful.
How long are sessions?
Sessions are 50 minutes.
How often are sessions?
Once a week. This ensures the consistency and flow of therapy.
What is Marriage Family Therapy? Isn’t it for married couples only?
As an MFT we get this question a lot! Actually, a Marriage Family Therapist can see just about anyone. This includes, children, adults, couples, and families. As Marriage Family Therapists, we have been trained to look at the entire family system meaning that when an individual comes into session, we don’t just look at him alone, we also look at the entire family dynamic. This tells us much more about the person and where they come from.
Will you give me advice and tell me what to do?
I help you learn more about yourself and your needs so you can make the best decision for yourself. I help give you the necessary tools to have more clarity and confidence and learn how to make decisions for yourself. At the same time, while I don’t tell you what to do, I am always here for you, cheering you on and believing that you have all the answers yourself.
I look forward to speaking with you about how I can help you towards your goals and relationships. Call me for your free phone consultation and to set up an appointment.
